Ten Things To Know About Social Media

  1. Have a plan. Know what you want to accomplish. Don’t do it just to be doing it.
  2. Be consistent, but not totally predictable.
  3. Pay attention to what’s going on around you. What are your friends (and your foes) doing?
  4. Think before you post. It’s okay to cancel a tweet or a post if you have second thoughts.
  5. Focus on engaging. To generate an action/response, first you must engage.
  6. Note which content resonates with you and others.
  7. One way to engage is to reply and/or comment. Another is to retweet or share.
  8. Freely share content from others. Just don’t claim it as your own.
  9. Twitter and Facebook are separate, distinct channels. Having your Facebook post go straight to your Twitter account is unwise (and lazy).
  10. Anything you post can potentially be seen by anybody—not just your followers and fans—even with safeguards. See #4.
